Welland couple wins city’s Winter Lights Contest the first year they’ve ‘done anything like this’

The COVID-19 pandemic may have resulted in a new hobby for Welland resident Scott Cullen.

Laid off for several months from his job with Niagara Parks Commission, he and his wife Lisa, who works for Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and has also been impacted by her employer being closed, decided to decorate their home on Classic Avenue with a unique Christmas lights display to pass the time.

They put so much work into it that it won them first place in the City of Welland’s Winter Lights Contest.

They use pixel bulbs, relatively new technology in holiday illumination. There is an “infinite” number of colours and settings that can be controlled by a computer, said Scott.

The garage door displays a message telling people to set the dials in their cars to a specific radio frequency to hear music set to the movement of the changing lights.

A projector plays Christmas images as well. Scenes from the holiday classic “Home Alone” were playing Saturday evening when the Welland Tribune stopped by to interview the couple.

The bulbs are fastened to screens on the front of the house, surrounded by stars and snowflakes that Scott made on a 3D printer.

There are homemade wooden Christmas trees covered in lights, and only one item you would find at a big-box store — a large inflatable snowman.

In the past, the Cullens would string up a few lights at their home in a southeast Welland subdivision, but with having time to spare, they decided to take things to the next level.
